3 Business Ideas

Coding Review/Mentoring
As a CS student who only started learning about coding since freshman year of college and had to mostly learn coding styles, standards, and conventions on my own through classes (which I also feel that majority of CS students go through the same process), I feel that aren’t many resources established around school campuses that are dedicated to helping students learn these useful fundamentals. When it comes to English writing classes, there are writing centers, tutoring, even paper review services that are available to help students improve their writing skills. In the same way for coding, I think a business that aims to help students improving their coding skills, reviewing their codes, and giving feedback can be something that’s extremely helpful at the same time profitable. Obviously, the business idea is limited to the marketplace of only college students and younger adults. On top of that, CS programs around the local area are very strict on academic integrity, especially when it comes to plagiarism. That is why I think this business must enforces the idea that its service is purely from a giving feedback on coding styles, or ways to write easy-to-read codes, or structuring classes, etc… The service is not meant to solve any problem that student would have on a homework, but rather only providing feedback that aims to improve the student’s coding skills.

Grocery Shopping Service

This is by no mean an original business idea, but I think it can still be profitable at a local level. Companies like Amazon have already offered this kind of service – shopping and delivering people’s grocery list to their door. However, at a corporate level, shipping costs are often high and undesirable, especially if the price for the list is anything as equal or less than the shipping cost itself—hence why this type of service hasn’t evolved a lot in the past recent years. However, at a local level and small business, we have an advantage of familiarity with stores around the area, better delivery time, and perhaps membership with local store. By membership with local store, I mean if the business has a decent customer base, membership cards with local retailers under the name of our business could help us save money on purchases at the same time gaining profit from essentially selling the products to customers at the price of their standings with the stores. Of course, the delivery charge must be reasonable and more desirable than that of Amazon’s. If the customer base grows, we save more on fuel costs as we get to shop for many customers with one trip. An app interface or online website is preferable.

Writing Software Application for Local Businesses
This idea comes from the mention of “beer and date money”. Small businesses are often the ones that seek to bring their businesses online an expand them. Offering to write websites, software, or mobile apps can be a good way for a soon to be graduated student to earn some earning and build resume for the time being looking for future career opportunities…
